Shopify vs WooCommerce vs PrestaShop — e-commerce platform comparison

Which e-commerce platform should you choose?

Choosing between Shopify, WooCommerce, and PrestaShop is one of the most important decisions when launching an online store. Each platform has a different cost model, flexibility level, and limitations. The wrong choice at the start means an expensive migration in a year or two.

Below I compare these three solutions in terms of cost, ease of use, scalability, SEO, and integrations — so you can make an informed decision matched to your business.

Shopify — pros and cons

Shopify is a SaaS platform — you pay a subscription and hosting, updates, and security are handled by the provider. Pros: fast launch, intuitive panel, built-in payments, app marketplace. Cons: monthly cost + transaction fees, limited code control, less flexible SEO and URLs than self-hosted.

Shopify fits D2C brands that want to launch quickly without hiring a developer. Less sensible when you need deep ERP integrations, custom checkout, or full server control.

WooCommerce — pros and cons

WooCommerce is an e-commerce plugin for WordPress — open source, self-hosted. Pros: full control, thousands of plugins, strong SEO, no platform commission (you pay hosting). Cons: requires technical care, updates, good hosting; performance depends on configuration.

WooCommerce is my most common choice for SMBs — flexibility, payment and shipping integrations, reasonable start cost. Ideal when you want to grow the store together with a blog and content marketing.

PrestaShop — pros and cons

PrestaShop is a dedicated e-commerce system (open source), popular in Europe. Pros: advanced store features out of the box, multilingual, B2B, solid module ecosystem. Cons: steep learning curve, uneven module quality, technical care needed for larger stores.

I choose PrestaShop when the client needs an advanced catalog, many currencies and languages, or specific B2B features — and WordPress/WooCommerce would feel too “blog-oriented”.

Quick comparison — Shopify vs WooCommerce vs PrestaShop

Start cost: Shopify — subscription from ~$39/mo; WooCommerce — hosting + domain; PrestaShop — hosting + setup. Flexibility: WooCommerce and PrestaShop beat Shopify. Speed to launch: Shopify wins. SEO: WooCommerce (WordPress) usually best. Enterprise scale: PrestaShop / Magento / Shopware — not Shopify Basic.

There is no “best” platform for everyone — only best for your model. Small craft shop ≠ B2B wholesale ≠ fashion brand from Instagram.

How to decide?

Ask yourself: Do I have a developer / technical care? How many products do I plan? Do I need warehouse / ERP integrations? Are SEO and content critical? What monthly budget for platform + marketing? Answers point the direction.

In a consultation I help choose the platform and prepare an implementation plan — without a bias of “always WooCommerce” or “always PrestaShop”. Your business matters, not my favorite tech.
