A backup is insurance for your online presence. Hack, bad plugin update, server failure, accidental file deletion — without a backup you can lose years of work and customer data in one moment. Restore from a good backup takes minutes; rebuild from scratch — weeks and significant cost.
Most companies learn this only after an incident. This article explains how to backup professionally and regularly, not “sometime in the hosting panel”.
A full site backup at minimum: files (WordPress, themes, plugins, uploads) + database (content, orders, users). For stores add integration config and key plugin settings export.
Files-only backup without database is half a site — after restore content and products are missing. Database-only without files — missing images and theme.
Frequency depends on change rate: store with daily orders — daily or every few hours. Company site updated monthly — weekly may suffice. Before major updates (WordPress, plugins, theme) — manual “just in case” backup.
Automation is key — manual backups are forgotten. Set a schedule and monitor success (email alerts on failure).
Use the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, on 2 different media, 1 off the main server (off-site). Backup only on the same hosting as the site does not protect against full server failure or account ransomware.
Off-site options: cloud (S3, Google Cloud, Backblaze), another server, local NAS. Encrypt backups with personal data (GDPR). Set retention — e.g. 7 daily, 4 weekly, 3 monthly.
A backup you never tested is hope, not a guarantee. Quarterly, test restore on staging: files and database, check login, forms, store. Only then you know it works.
Many discover corrupted archives only during failure — then it is too late. Restore test is 30 minutes of peace for years.
WordPress: UpdraftPlus, BlogVault, Jetpack Backup, hosting panel backup. Stores: hosting backup + plugins + order export to ERP. Do not rely only on “hosting backup” without knowing exactly what is copied.
